Brushing with a smile: How to Make Oral Hygiene Fun for Kids

If you set your kids up with great oral hygiene habits now, there’s a high chance they’ll stick through adulthood. But ensuring our children live a life filled with bright and healthy smiles would be a lot easier if they didn’t hate brushing and flossing so darn much!

For some kids, this hatred of brushing their teeth could come from health issues (like tooth or gum sensitivity - ouch!) but for most kids it comes down to one thing - IT’S BORING.

So, how can you make the experience of brushing more exciting? Here are a few fun ideas:

  1. Make a game out of it: Bluey’s parents aren’t the only ones with imagination. By sparking their creativity (and yours) you can make brushing time a whole lot more fun. Maybe your kid can take a turn at being the dentist, showing you how to do the brushing. Or they’re a superhero, saving the people of tooth town from bacteria and you’re their trusted side-kick!
  2. Play a podcast: If it’s boredom you need to bust, look no further than the BRUSHY podcast! It’s 2 minutes long (the perfect time for little brushers to get the job done) and chock full of cool facts and hilarious jokes the whole family will get a giggle over. The 2 minutes will fly by - they might even want to brush again just to hear the next episode…
  3. Let them pick their own toothbrush and toothpaste: If there's something kids love, it's autonomy (even when they really should be getting our help). If you let them choose the toothbrush and toothpaste they want to use it could give them a sense of ownership around the task of brushing, and even get them excited to use what they’ve picked! That’s the cool thing about a BRUSHY club toothbrush subscription - they’ll get two new toothbrushes every month along with a sticker and a fun mystery gift. Pair that with an episode of BRUSHY and they'll be begging for teeth cleaning time.

Give these tips a try and watch your kids start to form great dental habits that help battle pesky dental problems like cavities and gum disease. Also watch your life get easier as a daily routine they once kicked and screamed over becomes a fun time for the family!
